REIMAGINING HR

The human resources (HR) domain played a critical role in keeping the work machine functioning amidst challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and other related occurrences like The Great Resignation, wage increases, and labor shortage.

From being an enabler and support system to critical functions like sales, manufacturing, and R&D, HR has emerged as a key domain responsible for handling challenges in the modern ecosystem and providing a competitive edge to businesses.

The HR function is being reimagined as per the needs of the business, and there are significant changes taking place in the workplace. Here are some of the areas that Chief Human Resources Officers are looking at to bring transformational change to the HR domain:

Adopting technology:

One of the most significant transformational changes the pandemic has brought to the HR and other key functions of the business is the openness toward technological solutions.

The HR managers across the globe are willing to adopt solutions that can help handle administrative tasks and focus on data-driven decisions to assist the business is growing faster.

Rather than just limiting to the standard tracking and monitoring tools, the HR function is adopting technology in newer areas that improve the quality of delivery. While the pandemic has pushed the growth curve towards adopting technological solutions for better growth, it is expected that this trend will continue to find merit in the coming years, even as the pandemic subsides.

Increasing agility and fluidity:

Rather than just empowering other functions to be agile and fluid in their methodology, the HR function itself is expected to be more agile and fluid in coming times.

An agile and fluid HR function is expected to be more aligned with the current requirements of the business.

In place of traditional models that created silos and layers, the HR function is expected to be flexible and fast in initiation, execution, and delivery. In other words, new operating models are expected to be churned out to make the function more focused on the business goals rather than the bookish definition of the role.

Focus on the big picture:

The HR Department is expected to keep one eye on the big picture rather than getting entangled with the administrative tasks. Going forward, the HR department is likely to opt for automation and streamlining the routine tasks so that the entire effort is aligned towards achieving the company's vision rather than just handling administrative tasks day in and day out.

End-to-end delivery:

Gone are the days when two different teams handled strategic and transactional tasks. The HR function is expected to focus on the end-to-end delivery of each function under its purview.

The end-to-end structure is expected to transform the traditional functioning of the HR department in an organization. For instance, end-to-end processes will be created for better performance and accountability rather than dividing strategic and routine tasks.

Enhancing employee experience:

The employee journey in an organization is being looked at from the same lens with which retailers view customer journeys. Significant moments in an employee journey like onboarding, promotions, performance review, etc., are being kept in the center while designing a better employee experience. It is expected that companies would increasingly focus on providing an improved employee experience to handle modern-day challenges like labor shortage and increased attrition.

Empowering line managers:

Rather than relying on just the HR department for handling manpower-related issues, an increasing number of organizations are empowering the line managers to take responsibility for functions like hiring, performance review, etc. HR departments are engaged in designing processes under which the line managers would function to handle these tasks that HR managers have routinely handled. It is expected that this change will free up the HR function and equip them to take on leadership roles to address other issues.

Conclusion

It is expected that the turbulent global ecosystem will continue to throw new challenges on businesses to stay afloat. In such testing times, it is in the company's interest to look at transforming the HR function to help.
